CELEBRATING & OBSERVING WORLD’S INTERNATIONAL DEMOCRACY DAY

World International Democracy Day was commemorated on September 16th with hundreds of young people gathering on the campus of St. Paul’s Institute. Students joined in celebrating the day, which aimed to raise awareness about the importance of democracy. Traditionally, our town has observed this day to honour its significance. However, this year in the hills of Manipur, there was a palpable uncertainty about whether to celebrate or to dress in black and mourn the demise of democratic values. It has been a year and a half since our freedom was taken from us, right within our own state, leaving a deep sense of loss, grief and unhappiness with what and how our government failed us tribals in the land of Manipur.

With hands placed over their hearts, hundreds of young minds gathered to pledge to the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, vowing to uphold the true values and principles of democracy. They committed themselves to the sacred words enshrined in the foundations of India’s freedom and democratic spirit. While doubts and fears linger, it is these enduring values and principles in which they continue to place their trust, despite the many  disappointments that have challenged their faith in the system.

From dawn to dusk, the youth worked tirelessly, nerves on edge as they prepared for the big day. Some were busy crafting posters, while others practised their speeches on democracy. A few immersed themselves in studying the Constitution of India, preparing to recite its key sections, and designing vibrant posters to display. Everyone participated—from planning to organising—to ensure the day was observed with purpose and impact so that the audience could grasp the true significance of Democracy Day and understand why it matters deeply to us all.

As voices echoed through the pledge, a renewed ray of hope spread, instilling faith in the power of democracy. The speeches delivered by young minds inspired hundreds, emphasizing why democracy is the backbone of a nation and underscoring the role and responsibilities of youth in upholding its principles. These words served as a motivation to all who listened, reminding them of their duty to protect and strengthen the democratic fabric essential to the country’s future. Empowering youth to take a stand, the message was clear: sitting idle is no longer an option. They were encouraged to actively uphold constitutional values and engage meaningfully, recognising that their voices matter profoundly in shaping the future. A profound sense of inner conflict lingers, shaped by the hardships they’ve endured—struggles marked by violence, discrimination, and conflict, along with the palpable apathy of the government.

The occasion stirred mixed emotions: on one hand, it instilled hope; on the other, it reminded everyone of the government’s shortcomings in failing to protect the people of the place. Yet, it reinforced a commitment to uphold the values and principles that can either strengthen or weaken the very foundation of democracy. It is the youth—empowered, driven, and dedicated to building a system that is free, fair, and just—who hold the potential for change. These young people are passionate about the well-being of others and committed to shaping a brighter future for all. The youth’s openness and enthusiasm for learning, along with their quest for deeper understanding, are truly inspiring. Despite their fears that this knowledge may not resolve their conflicts or lead to better outcomes, their motivation remains strong.

The resilience of young minds and their sense of responsibility are truly commendable. Amidst political, social, ethnic, and linguistic challenges, and despite facing resistance, prolonged conflict, vulnerability, and marginalization, their belief in the potential of democracy remains steadfast. They trust in what democracy can achieve for the people when it is truly upheld by the people.

The day encouraged youth with the message: let this be the first step, the beginning of a tradition of honoring democracy and understanding its deep-rooted history for what it truly represents. May this serve as a guiding force, inspiring future generations who can one day say, “It was through democracy and human rights that I helped lead my land to freedom.”

Observing the day marked the first step forward, but instilling the profound significance of democracy remains essential. Democracy must be deeply rooted in the minds of the youth, as they are the future, and their role is vital in shaping a more just and equal tomorrow. In a region where conflict has been prevalent and discontentment with the government runs deep, celebrating democracy meaningfully and leaving a lasting impact remains a significant challenge.
